Bridging Science and Spirituality

On my Hay House radio show recently, I was blessed with a visit from my friend Dr. Larry Dossey, author of the book  One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters. Larry is the distinguished author of many other books, including the New York Times bestseller, Healing Words. One Mind is his most recent work and a book I more than loved—I just breathed it in! Larry is an internal medicine physician and the former chief-of-staff of Medical City Dallas Hospital. One Mind marks his latest achievement in bringing scientific understanding to spirituality, a quest very  dear to my heart.

Here’s what Larry says: “I used to believe that we must choose between science and reason on one hand, and spirituality on the other, in how we lead our lives. Now I consider this a false choice. We can recover the sense of sacredness, not just in science, but in perhaps every area of life.” One Mind is a review of all the scientific evidence that suggests there is one all-encompassing, infinite dimension of intelligence that we all share. Larry has collected all the research that points to the fact that there is one universal consciousness/one mind, that we are all connected, that we can make conscious contact with other living beings through telepathy. He includes many amazing examples of the power of collective meditation and the ability of animals to communicate with people.

One indication of how much I loved this book is my copious underlining throughout and the 25 pages of notes I took while reading it! I believe as Larry does that we are connected to everything alive. I have wondered if the extreme weather and global unrest we are experiencing is related to our out-of-balance thinking and feeling. Now more than ever we need to focus on love, kindness, and respect for one another and our planet.

Here, Larry explains why the concept of the One Mind matters:

In simpler times it was not greatly important to the overall health of the planet and the future of humanity how any single individual behaved. The natural world contained absorbent buffers capable of neutralizing even massive human stupidity. That time has passed. Our room for error is diminishing. Many scientists believe that irreversible tipping points loom. Unlike previous generations, we can glimpse an end.

The One Mind concept is scientific, philosophical, and spiritual but it is also enormously practical. It is about survival, the highest form of practicality. It is about summoning the better angels of our nature. It is about saving our own skins and those of future generations as well.
